Virginia Commonwealth University’s RTR Teacher Residency program has received a $2.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to enhance and expand its efforts in preparing teachers and school leaders for high-need schools across Virginia

Funded through the Teacher Quality Partnership program, this grant aims to improve teacher retention and effectiveness in underserved areas. The three-year award, with the possibility of a two-year extension, could bring the total funding to over $9.5 million. RTR is thrilled to continue in its endeavor of offering aspiring educators a pathway to earn their degrees tuition-free in exchange for a commitment to serve high-needs schools.

Since its inception, RTR has prepared over 370 teachers, many of whom have become leaders and mentors within the education system. The program’s success and potential earned strong backing from Virginia lawmakers, including Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kain and Representatives Jennifer McClellan and Abigail Spanberger. These leaders praised RTR for its dedication to training committed educators and supporting students from all backgrounds. They emphasized the importance of federal investment in initiatives like RTR to ensure that all students have access to excellent teachers and educational opportunities.
