National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT)

About the program

National Board Certification is a voluntary professional development program that recognizes accomplished teachers who meet rigorous standards of performance. Certification attests that a teacher meets the highest standards established.

To become certified, candidates must complete assessments of their knowledge and skills. Candidates assemble a school-site portfolio that includes student work samples, video clips of lessons, and reflective commentaries about their usage of strategies that increase student learning. Additionally, candidates respond to test questions that demonstrate their depth and breadth of knowledge in the subject matter they specialize in. Each new cohort of NBCT’s are celebrated annually at the NBCT Pinning Ceremony along with MOC (Maintenance of Certification) teachers.

CTL believes that teachers need the support of National Board Certified Teachers, fellow candidates, and other mentors. To aid in this we provide local and statewide support.

Local Support

The Metropolitan Education Training Alliance (META) Candidate Support Program is a National Board support program for teachers within Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover, Richmond, and Powhatan Public Schools. To assist in the certification process, CTL conducts workshops to clarify each aspect and expand a network of support for the educators that strive to meet these standards.
